March 9, 2010 Sustainable Banking Pioneers Plan to Touch a Billion Lives by 2020 Leaders of the world's sustainable banks have closed the second meeting of the Global Alliance for Banking on Values (GABV), in Bangladesh, with a commitment to take their values-based banking mainstream
The GABV, a network of eleven of the world's leading sustainable banks, came together in Bangladesh to try to build a viable future for the financial industry. At its close, the organization is pledging to touch the lives of one billion people by 2020. It expects the growth to come from expanding the network's membership significantly, supporting banks looking to adopt genuinely values-driven models, and the creation of new sustainable banks.
The members of the GABV spent three days near Dhaka working together to grow sustainable banking and its impact globally, focus on joint capital raising efforts, and build an infrastructure to support the development of a new generation of sustainable bankers to use it. The network's members plan to promote and demonstrate the impact of business models which focus on solutions to the world's most urgent social and environmental problems.
Speaking at the close of the conference, Sir Fazle Hasan Abed –co-founder of the GABV and founder and Chairperson of BRAC and the meeting's host, says: “The members of the Global Alliance for Banking on Values have committed to touch the lives of one billion people by 2020. This is a major new pledge that could transform lives on a truly global scale, and make a substantial difference in our efforts to combat climate change.”
“We believe sustainable banking – which focuses on people and the environment as well as profit – should reach one billion people by 2020 when a number of key international targets converge,” said Peter Blom, Chair and co-founder of the GABV, and CEO of European sustainable bank, Triodos. “We need to raise more money and invest in the sustainable bankers of the future so we can use this finance to its full potential. This commitment is an important line in the sand. We believe values-led banking can and should make a positive difference to the lives of one in six people within ten years.”
The GABV, which uses finance to deliver sustainable development for unserved people, communities and the environment, represents seven million customers in 20 countries, with a combined balance sheet of over $14 billion. It was launched in March 2009. Its members are profitable and many are growing rapidly during the financial crisis. But they are conspicuous in the banking industry for using their profits to deliver financial, community and environmental ends.
The GABV has already announced a commitment to raise $250 million in new capital over three years to support the expansion of $2 billion in lending to green projects and unserved communities around the world, at the 2009 Clinton Global Initiative in New York. The money will be raised by investors – including existing individual customers, institutions and new investors. Extending this capital substantially in future years will help to reach the one billion target.
The conference was inaugurated by the Honorable Minister of Finance Mr. Abul Maal Abdul Muhith on 6th March. The three day conference is being hosted by BRAC Bank, the only bank from the Southeast Asia region which is one of the founder-member banks.
March 6, 2010 Bangladesh Summit Promises a Different Future for Banking Leaders of the world's sustainable banks have come together to build a positive financial future for the banking industry, at the second meeting of the Global Alliance for Banking on Values
As the world grapples with the continuing pain of the financial crisis, an independent network of eleven banks, will come together in Bangladesh to try to build a viable, sustainable future for the financial industry. Members of the Global Alliance for Banking on Values (GABV) believe that they can demonstrate that a brave new future for the banking industry is possible, and that their members are already delivering it.
The GABV, which uses finance to deliver sustainable development for unserved people, communities and the environment, represents seven million customers in 20 countries, with a combined balance sheet of over $14 billion. It has announced an ambitious commitment to support the expansion of $2 billion in lending to unserved communities and green projects around the world. And all this, in a country which many experts believe will be hit hardest and earliest by the impact of climate change.
Speaking at the launch of the second meeting of the GABV in Dhaka, Fazle Hasan Abed - co-founder of the GABV and founder and Chairperson of BRAC, the world's largest NGO with microfinance operations, said: “The banking industry is uniquely placed, particularly in the developing world - where fighting poverty will remain the first priority in the foreseeable future - to provide a significant impetus in creating livelihoods and ensuring a more inclusive growth agenda. It is not growth per se but the 'quality of growth' that creates sustainability. Climate change is the other growing global threat that the banking industry has to commit itself to. Here, the first world banks must take the lead and for us in the developing world there is need to recognize the fact that this is a 'core' sustainability issue.”
The GABV aims to raise $250 million in new capital by pooling the expertise and resources of its members. “Raising this money will result in $2 billion in new lending, at a time when credit continues to be scarce,” said Peter Blom, Chair and co-founder of the GABV and CEO of Triodos Bank in the Netherlands. “We need to raise more money and invest in the sustainable bankers of the future so we can use it to its full potential. And we want to promote sustainable banking models that can deal with long-term social and environmental crises."
The banks operate in countries as diverse as Germany, Mongolia, Peru, and the US, and have weathered the financial storm with considerable success. According to Katrin Kaeufer, research fellow at MIT, they share a number of characteristics that could be adopted more widely to build a sustainable world economy. “Many of these banks have continued to be successful during the downturn. Before we return to business as usual it seems sensible to examine why. There's no one secret, but these banks all have sustainability embedded in everything they do. They are transparent, values-driven institutions that promise a genuinely different future for banking.”
The banks will spend three days near Dhaka, working together to build a specific capital raising programme, exploring an education programme to develop a new breed of sustainable bankers to handle the money they raise, and identifying the issues that they are best placed to campaign on.

February 4, 2010 Rupali Bank joins technology network led by BRAC Bank Pioneering partnership between a public and private sector bank
Mrs. Halima of Rajoir village in Madaripur used to travel 12 kilometers every month to collect the hard-earned money her husband had sent from Malaysia. "Money comes to private banks who has branches at main city, we only have a government bank branch near our 'moholla' – that branch doesn't give me the money". She still smiles, withdrawing the money from a BRAC Bank SME Center. "At least we have these banks where we get money almost by the time he calls me from his work."
Remittance recipients like Mrs. Halima now can actually withdraw money from any nearby Rupali Bank branch as well. The public bank has just joined ELDORADO, a state-of-the-art, online, real-time remittance distribution system that enables recipients to withdraw money from any branch of any of the member banks in.
Rupali Bank Limited (RBL) today signed agreements with BRAC Bank Limited (BBL) to join in ELDORADO and OMNIBUS shared networks. The two banks inked the deals in presence of Dr. Atiur Rahman, Governor of Bangladesh Bank.
BRAC Bank initiated ELDORADO to bring in banks on a common technological platform to share foreign remittances. With Rupali Bank joining this network, this network now has 9 banks, whereby foreign remittances can be withdrawn across over 1,000 branches across the country, that too instantly!
OMNIBUS, on the other hand, is a shared ATM (Automated Teller Machine) and POS (Point of Sales) network led by BRAC Bank. This technological platform helps customers of members banks to use any ATM of the member banks. From now on, customers of RBL can use shared network of over 300 ATMs of OMNIBUS across Bangladesh. The combined network also has over 1,200 POS terminals and 1 million ATM card users.
Mr. Md. Abdul Hamid Miah, Managing Director of Rupali Bank and Mr. A. E. A. Muhaimen, Managing Director & CEO of BRAC Bank signed an agreement on behalf of their respective organizations in presence of Dr. Atiur Rahman, Honorable Governor of Bangladesh Bank and Mr. Ahmed Al-Kabir (Ph.D), Chairman of RBL.
Mr. S. M. Mahfuzur Rahaman (Ph.D), Director;; Mr. Jaglul Karim, Deputy Managing Director of Rupali Bank; Mr. Tarique Amin Bhuiyan, Chief Information Officer of BRAC Bank and senior officials of both the banks.
"We all talk about a Digital Age, a Digital Bangladesh. It is indeed inspiring to see that in sync with this priority of the government, public banks are also growing technologically advanced.", said Dr. Atiur Rahman, Governor of Bangladesh Bank. "Because of the huge investment in such initiatives, it is always more sensible to have a common platform. I am happy that Rupali Bank is the first government bank to take such a bold step towards customer benefit."
Rupali Bank has been holding back most of its initiatives in pursuit of privatization. Government recently appointed Dr. Ahmed Al-Kabir, a veteran development and health-administration specialist and faculty at John Hopkins University as the Chairman. Industry specialists see this as a positive move to bring RBL back on speed. "Public bank like Rupali Bank has such an unmatchable reach, both in terms of number of branches and the human power. These resources can now be utilized exponentially once we have necessary technological setup" he said. "But for such a scale, it is too large an investment and the time-frame would also be a challenge. The obvious optimum choice was to join a fool-proof system developed by the private banking industry, such as ELDORADO and OMNIBUS."
Speaking at the signing ceremony, Mr. Muhaimen said, "BRAC Bank initiated these technology platforms with a vision to create a wider network for banking customers. Irrespective of which bank a customer has account with, if we all can join one common journey of getting closer to them, it will help everyone in the industry, as well as result into a positive impact on overall economic development of the nation."
In this occasion, Mr. Md. Abdul Hamid Miah, Managing Director of Rupali Bank said, "Rupali Bank joins ELDORADO and OMNIBUS for the natural reason to provide round-the-clock better banking services through a greater ATM & POS network for our customers and to reach remittances to customers in remote areas through our branches".
This partnership is the first of its kind in the industry where a public bank has partnered with a technology platform led by any private bank. Sharing of resources and knowledge would only enhance benefit for the end-customers like Mrs. Halima. The two banks also shared common matters of interest. BRAC Bank even presented their SME Experience and Model for Rupali Bank. The program was also attended by Mr. S. M. Mahfuzur Rahaman (Ph.D), Director, Mr. Jaglul Karim, Deputy Managing Director of Rupali Bank, Mr. Tarique Amin Bhuiyan, Chief Information Officer of BRAC Bank and other senior officials of both the banks.

January 24, 2010 BRAC Bank to receive international grant towards creating Savings Accounts for the poor
Country's leading SME Bank is going to receive part of a $5.5 million grant from ShoreBank International to help provide the poor with safe, affordable places to save their money. The grant is part of a package from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation that will be given to six intermediaries including ShoreBank International.
BRAC Bank is one of the four banks nominated from Asia by ShoreBank for this signature package. The bank will utilize the grant to expand its portfolios and make savings accounts available to the poor and grass-root people across Bangladesh in the next five years. This will create new ways for the poor to make deposits and withdrawals, expand the availability of existing savings products, and fund savings-focused marketing campaigns.
“Access to savings services and products protects the poor by making them less vulnerable, while opening the door to new economic opportunities and earning a positive return,” said Laurie J. Spengler, President of ShoreBank International Ltd.
BRAC Bank has been a pioneer in extending SME loans to the missing-middle of the country – people who are at grass-root level, in need of financial service larger than micro-finance-scale but smaller than the medium corporate. While the bank's unique model has contributed in improving the lives of millions of poor people by offering small loans, providing access to safe, affordable savings accounts has been a challenge because of the high costs for both banks and customers.
“There is certainly an opportunity for banking at the grass-root level,” Mr. A.E.A. Muhaimen, Managing Director and CEO of BRAC Bank said in a reaction, “but bringing them an affordable savings account in a sustainable manner remains a challenge.” He thanked having shareholders like ShoreCap Exchange (a concern of ShoreBank International) whose global presence helps BRAC Bank to avail such opportunities.
Syed Faridul Islam, Head of SME Banking at BRAC Bank, mentioned, “Contrary to popular beliefs, we saw that the grass-root people also have their own, informal, some-what unsafe ways to savings. For banks, the costs of physical buildings with dedicated staff are expensive, especially in remote areas or where there is a limited number of clients with small deposits. We do have the technical know-how and a reach through 429 SME Unit Offices; this Grant will now enable us to reach to the remote areas with savings accounts.”
Industry experts mentioned that poor households with access to savings accounts are more likely to invest in education, increase productivity and income, and reduce vulnerability to illness and other unexpected events. “The poor have surprisingly sophisticated financial lives and present a rapidly emerging business opportunity for banking in the developing world,” said Jonathan Morduch, professor at New York University and co-author of Portfolios of the Poor. “Savings initiatives like these help strengthen and expand financial institutions, enabling them to overcome significant barriers and provide affordable savings accounts to the poor in a sustainable manner.”

There are more than 1 crore people in Bangladesh who are carrying the risk of Thalassemia – an inherited blood disorder by which the body is unable to produce adequate hemoglobin in red cells. The best treatment available today is of frequent blood transfusions every two or three weeks with iron chelating therapy. Otherwise, this disorder results in death. As a consequence, a larger pool of blood supply is needed in blood banks to treat Thalassemia patient.
BRAC Bank came forward today to enrich such a blood-bank. Through a voluntiary blood donation program at its head office, bank employees donated blood for Bangladesh Thalassemia Hospital.
The program was announced among the bank employees a week before. Employees volunteered in groups well-before the official inauguration time of 12 pm. Enthusiastic donors ranged from the very top of the managemeng tier to the very bottom – all in the same forum, for the same noble cause.
'We collected blood after necessary health screening. It was impressive to receive such enormous response from a private organization. We hope this will remain as a wonderful example and other organization will also follow through. This is how we will create awareness of thalassemia from the forefront', said Advisor of Bangladesh Thalassemia Hospital Mr. Mustafizur Rahman Khan.
BRAC Bank has always been active as a socially responsible corporate house. This time, the bank went one step further: having the employees individually contributing for a great cause. 'We have tried to be engaged with the society. Today's endevour is another step towards living closer to you.', says Managing Director and CEO of BRAC Bank Mr. A. E. A. Muhaimen.
Thalassemia is a blood disorder which comes through genetic trait. If both the parents carry the sick cells in their gene, then there is a possibility of their children being affected with Thalassaemia. The patient suffers from prolong anemia and in absence of correct treatment, the child may survive only for about 5 years. According to the World Health Organization report, in Bangladesh more than 11 million people are thalassemia patient.
We can avoid this deadly disease by creating awareness. Proper blood screening at young age – even prior to their marriage – can determine whether the person is at risk of giving birth of a child who'll become a thalassemia patient or not.
BRAC Bank earlier also supported awareness campaign against thalassemia through various initiatives.

The World's Leading Sustainable Banks Announce Major New Commitment Global Alliance for Banking on Values commit to support $2 billion lending expansion
A new network of growing, crisis-resistant, sustainable banks has announced an ambitious commitment to support the expansion of $2 billion in lending to disadvantaged communities and green projects around the world.
The Global Alliance for Banking on Values made the announcement at the Clinton Global Initiative in New York this month. The independent network of eleven of the world's leading sustainable banks - who serve over 7 million customers, in 20 countries, with a combined balance sheet of over $10 billion - was launched earlier this year in the Netherlands. According to its Chair, it already has concrete proposals to start making a major impact.
"We commit, over three years, to assist our members and other sustainable finance institutions to secure $250 million in additional capital," says Peter Blom, CEO of Dutch ethical bank, Triodos, and Chair of the Global Alliance for Banking on Values. "This capital will lead to $2 billion in new lending. At a time when the global financial system is struggling to lend, our members and other genuinely sustainable banks will benefit millions of borrowers - from individual entrepreneurs in Asia, Africa and South America, to pioneering new green projects in North America and Europe."
"Sustainable banks will need to raise capital to continue to build on their considerable achievements and deliver on their huge potential," says Mary Houghton, President of the ShoreBank Corporation.
"The commitment we are announcing today demonstrates just how powerful this opportunity is. We are determined to take it."
The Global Alliance for Banking on Values United States launch, took place at the Clinton Global Initiative's Annual Meeting on Friday 25 September. The banks in the Alliance range from ShoreBank, ShoreBank, the first community development and environmental bank in the U.S., based in Chicago, to BRAC Bank - part of the BRAC Group, the world's largest microfinance institution - and Triodos Bank, Europe's leading sustainable bank and this year's winner of the Financial Times Sustainable Bank of the Year Award.
The new partnership plans to develop new ways of working, build organizations better suited to long-term sustainable thinking, and new forms of ownership and economic cooperation. And, given the financial crisis, and its profound and lasting influence, the new Alliance believes its timing is crucial.
According to Fazle Hasan Abed, Founder and Chairperson of BRAC, "If we are to tackle the global problems we face, we are going to need international action to do it. We believe these banks have the potential to change the architecture of the financial world, and start delivering lasting solutions for unserved and underserved communities and sectors."
