November 26, 2013 BRAC Bank brings smile to 26,000 poor people with warm clothes well ahead of winter
BRAC Bank Limited has brought smile to more than 26,000 poor people in Northern region by distributing warm clothes well ahead of winter.
Northern region is hit hard by severe cold spell every winter. People of the area were touched by receiving warm clothes well ahead of winter season. Many poor old-aged people queued up and received warm clothes. They broke down in tears after getting the clothes.
On receiving a blanket, Mr. Abdul Aziz, 80 year old man at Bhurungamari in Kurigram, said, “Warm clothes ahead of winter come as great help for us. We can now have good night’s sleep this winter. May Allah bless you.”
The initiative carries warmth of about 8,000 employees who have donated warm clothes for the less advantaged people of the society. Apart from donating warm clothes, the employees also raised fund to buy blankets to help people survive the imminent winter. Every year in winter, BRAC Bank employees come forward for helping the humanity.
Three teams of BRAC Bank distributed 3,500 blankets 6,000 sweaters and 17,000 warm clothes in three Northern districts. The locations are – Bhurungamari in Kurigram, Dimla in Nilphamari and Harivasha in Panchagarh
Like previous year, the employees of BRAC Bank have donated fund on the eve of "BRAC Bank DAUR – Kallayaner Pathchala", an annual marathon to raise fund for humanitarian cause. A portion of the fund has been utilized for buying blankets for distributing among less advantaged people.

BRAC Bank Limited has launched its 5th subsidiary, BRAC IT Services Limited (bITS), to provide world class technology solutions in Bangladesh.
The IT venture is formed in view of growing demand of IT services in financial and other sectors in Bangladesh.

October 24, 2013 BRAC Bank and PJD Trust scholarship for meritorious students of children of Patuakhali journalists 40 students receive scholarship for 2013
Scholarship money has been handed over to the meritorious school-going children of Patuakhali-based journalists under joint initiative of BRAC Bank Limited and Patuakhali Journalists Development Trust (PJD Trust).
A total of 40 students received scholarship money in a ceremony held at Dr. Atahar Uddin Auditorium at Patuakhali Press Club on October 24, 2013.
Presided over by Mr. Gazi Munibur Rahman Bachchu, President of Editorial Board, weekly Priyo Kagoj and Trustee, PJD Trust, the ceremony was also attended by Mr. Zeeshan Kingshuk Huq, Head of Communication & Service Quality, BRAC Bank, as the Special Guest.
This is a unique and the first such scholarship program designed for meritorious children of journalist community. Under the program titled "PJD Trust - BRAC Bank Scholarship", a total of 40 school-going children of as many newsmen get Tk. 10,000 each in a year as scholarship to continue their studies. The program began in 2010 and will run for five years.
Also present as the Special Guests were Professor A. K. M. Shahidul Islam, former Principal of Patuakhali Government College and Convener of scholarship selection panel, Mr. Md. Shafiqur Rahman Chan Mia, President, Patuakhali Chamber of Commerce and Industry, and Mr. Swapan Banerjee, President, Patuakhali Press Club.

BRAC Bank Limited, the largest SME Bank in the country, has launched a photography competition to capture the spirit and endurance of the enterprising SME entrepreneurs.
Under contest titled 'BRAC Bank SME Photography Competition 2013', a group of young photographers will visit business establishments of exceptional SME entrepreneurs in different part of the country to create a photographic profile of the businesses.
The photo-stories will illustrate the life struggles, challenges SME entrepreneurs confronted and the determination and hard work the unsung heroes exerted to succeed.
Mr. Syed Mahbubur Rahman, Managing Director & CEO, BRAC Bank, said, "We see small entrepreneurs and their endeavor is often left unnoticed. So, we have taken this initiative to bring up their real life stories to general mass."

August 01, 2013 3 BRAC Bank customers win motorbikes in Western Union's Global Ramadan Campaign
BRAC Bank and Western Union (WU) handed over motorbikes to three BRAC Bank customers, who won grand prizes under Western Union's Global Ramadan Campaign.
Mr. Syed Mahbubur Rahman, Managing Director & CEO, BRAC Bank, formally handed over the motorbikes at a program at BRAC Bank premises on August 1, 2013.
The WU Global campaign started on the 11th of July and will continue till 14th August 2013. Each day, one remittance customer will win a motorbike (TVS Metro 100 cc) through the lucky draw conducted by WU. A total of 31 motorbikes will be given out during this campaign period.
Non-winning entries accumulate on a daily basis and are given another opportunity to win on the following days till the end of the campaign. The names of the winners are also announced on FM Radio.

BRAC Bank has relocated its Eskaton Branch to a larger space for better customer service.
Sir Fazle Hasan Abed, Chairman, BRAC Bank Limited, formally inaugurated the branch on July 8, 2013. Mr. Hashem Khan, famous painter of the country, was present as the Special Guest. Mr. Syed Mahbubur Rahman, Managing Director & CEO, and senior officials were also present.

Renowned writer Professor Dr. Anisuzzaman, novelist Bulbul Chowdhury and young writer Shuvashis Sinha have won BRAC Bank-Samakal Shahitya Puroshkar 2012.
Professor Dr. Anisuzzaman won the award for his 'Bangalee Sangskriti O Onnanyo' in essay, autobiography, travel story and translation category, Bulbul Chowdhury for his novel 'Ai Ghore Lokhkhi Thake' in poetry and novel category and Shuvashis Sinha for his novel 'Kulimanur Ghum' in young writer category.
BRAC Bank and Daily Samakal launched the literary award in 2011 to inspire writers and litterateurs to further enriching Bangla literature with their creative works. This year Young Writer's Award has been dedicated in memory of late legendary novelist Humayun Ahmed.
The award was announced at a program at Pan Pacific Sonargaon Hotel in Dhaka on May 10, 2013. Literary personalities and social elites of the country attended the award program. Mr. Syed Mahbubur Rahman, Managing Director & CEO, BRAC Bank Limited, and Mr. Golam Sarwar, Editor of Daily Samakal, were present.
Winners in essay, autobiography, travel story and translation category and poetry and novel category received Tk. 1 lac each while winner in young writer category got Tk. 50,000 as prize money. The winners also received crest and citation. The three winning books were selected from books published in the year 2012.
Since its inception the literary award has generated huge enthusiasm in literary community of Bangladesh. More than 500 books were submitted this year for the three categories. June 5, 2013 BRAC Bank starts approval of instant loan at premises of SME entrepreneurs
BRAC Bank has launched spot loan facility that approves loan instantly at the very premises of SME entrepreneurs.
To meet urgent fund requirement of SME customers, the bank officials themselves visit business premises of the entrepreneurs and upon assessment hand over sanction letters subject to regulatory compliance.
Customers do not need to come to bank, now bank comes to the doorstep of customer to provide service.
Mr. Syed Mahbubur Rahman, Managing Director & Chief Executive Officer, BRAC Bank, said, "We have been providing collateral-free loan to SME entrepreneurs since our inception. In fact more than 90% of our SME loan is collateral free. Spot loan is a new addition to our service. This is a step closer to taking banking to the un-banked."
So far BRAC Bank has disbursed about Tk. 130 million in spot loan to 156 SME entrepreneurs. The facility has generated huge enthusiasm among the SME entrepreneurs.
The entrepreneurs can avail upto Tk. 1 million without any collateral. The fast, collateral-free loan process is designed to help the small businessmen in grassroots level to expand their businesses.
The facility has been launched on pilot basis in Narayanganj, Gazipur, Dhaka, Chittagong, Comilla, Bogra and Faridpur. Gradually the facility will be available all over the country on regular basis.
Small businesses in production, trading, services, agro-based companies with 3 years of operations can avail the spot loan. The faster credit flow will add new dynamism in SME sector. With quick sanction of loan, the entrepreneurs can plan their business operations and set expansion strategy smoothly.
In just twelve years into SME-focused banking, BRAC Bank has already disbursed Tk. 225,000 million to more than 0.4 million SME entrepreneurs generating more than 1.2 million direct employments.
May 25, 2013 BRAC Bank organizes largest ever SME entrepreneur conference of the occasion of 12th anniversary
BRAC Bank has organized the largest ever conference of SME entrepreneurs for development and future road map of the promising sector on the occasion of 12th anniversary of the bank.
This is the first ever such conference with participation of SME customers, officials of the central bank, elites of the society and officials of the bank.
More than 2,000 entrepreneurs from across the country joined in the conference titled 'BRAC Bank SME Uddokta Shommelon' held at Shaheed Suhrawardy Indoor Stadium in Mirpur on May 25, 2013. The conference is aimed at infusing renewed dynamism in the SME sector.
At the daylong conference, the entrepreneurs shared experience with each other. They shared their problems and prospects with policymakers and the bank officials. They got networking opportunity to explore business partnership with co-entrepreneurs.
Dr. Atiur Rahman, Governor, Bangladesh Bank, appreciated BRAC Bank for organizing the largest gathering of SME entrepreneurs to boost the sector. He said, in a country like Bangladesh with huge population, we need labor intensive industry like small and medium enterprises that creates huge employment. It is the SME entrepreneurs who keep the economy vibrant.
Access to finance for SME entrepreneurs has improved a lot over the years. Even entrepreneurs of remote part of the country now get easy access to credit. He urged the commercial banks to further increase credit flow to SME sector.

Mr. Shykh Seraj, Media Personality, made a presentation on development and future of SME sector and shared advices for expansion of small businesses. He will also make a documentary on the conference for raising awareness of the entrepreneurs.
At the Shommelon, one entrepreneur from seven each divisions were honored with 'Astha Puroshkar' (Trust Award). At total of 13 awards were given including in categories of 'Nari Uddokta Puroshkar' (Women Entrepreneur Award) and 'Shrijonshil Uddokta Puroshkar' (Creative Entrepreneur Award). Dr. Atiur Rahman, Governor, Bangladesh Bank, handed over the awards.

May 09, 2013 BRAC Bank declares 15% stock dividend, revises rights share price at 14th AGM
BRAC Bank Limited has approved 15 percent stock dividend (bonus shares) for its shareholders for the year 2012.
The bank has also revised its rights share price to Tk. 20 including a premium of Tk. 10 per share.
The decisions were made at the Bank's 14th Annual General Meeting (AGM), held at BRAC-CDM, Savar on Thursday, May 9, 2013.
Chaired by Sir Fazle Hasan Abed, Chairman of BRAC Bank Limited, the meeting was attended, among others, by the Directors Mr. Muhammad A. (Rumee) Ali, Mr. Shib Narayan Kairy, Ms. Tamara Hasan Abed, Dr. Hafiz G. A. Siddiqi, Ms. Zahida Ispahani, Managing Director & CEO Mr. Syed Mahbubur Rahman and Company Secretary Mr. Rais Uddin Ahmad.
The Chairman of the Bank informed the shareholders at the AGM that the bank earned Tk. 5,145 million operating profit and Tk. 540 million profit-after-tax during the year 2012.
Addressing the AGM, the Bank's Chairman expressed his gratitude to the shareholders, stakeholders and management for their continuous support to the company.

Mr. Ishtiaq Mohiuddin has been appointed as Deputy Managing Director of BRAC Bank. Prior to joining BRAC Bank, Mr. Ishtiaq Mohiuddin was the Director of Microfinance at BRAC and BRAC International.

BRAC Bank has handed over insurance money to the family of deceased SME customer.
BRAC Bank recently handed over a cheque for Tk. 737,524 to Mrs. Morzina, wife of the customer, at a ceremony at Ghatail SME Krishi Branch in Tangail. Mr. Md. Nazrul Islam Khan, Chairman of Ghatail Upazilla, the son and the daughter of the customer, were present.
Mr. Bimol Kumar Saha, Manager, Ghatail SME Krishi Branch, Mr. A T M Ashadulha, Zonal Manager, Madhupur Zone, and local elites also attended the ceremony.
Mr. Md. Ruhul Amin, proprietor of M/S Rifat Traders at Gopalpur in Tangail, took a loan from BRAC Bank for business expansion. The customer died in December, 2012. As part of the life insurance facility that comes with SME loan of BRAC Bank, the deceased family is relieved of the burden of the outstanding loan. On the occasion of Independence Day, BRAC Bank organized an exceptional program for sharing liberation war stories to its young employees.
In the program, renowned historian Dr. Muntasir Mamun and daughter of martyred intellectual Ms. Shomi Kaiser described history of war of independence of Bangladesh. The young employees of the bank were touched by chronicle of events, their personal and family stories and experiences of liberation war.
In the program held on March 27, 2013, BRAC Bank employees gathered together at Head Office and sang the National Anthem. They paid deep tribute to martyrs of liberation war by placing floral wreathe at replica of national memorial (Smriti Shoudhu). Employees wearing red and green dresses gathered at colorfully decorated Head Office.
Apart from Head Office, the program was also held at all SME Territory Offices across the country. Local freedom fighters and customers from martyred family attended the program and shared liberation war stories.

SME finances have resulted in robust business growth, improved socio-economic life and environmental awareness of entrepreneurs significantly, a study on a Bangladeshi SME bank reveals.
BRAC Bank's credit program has positively and significantly brought changes in the financial, environmental and socio-economic life of its SME borrowers, the study says.
Profit of repeat borrowers has increased and return on assets as well showing robustness of financial state of small entrepreneurs. Credit of BRAC Bank, the largest SME bank in Bangladesh, has made significant impact on income and savings, and encouraged businessmen to reinvest profit for expansion, the study finds.
The Impact Measurement Study on SME Borrowers conducted by Centre for Corporate Governance and Finance Studies of University of Dhaka assessed impact of finances on SME borrowers of BRAC Bank in Bangladesh.
The study commissioned by Global Alliance for Banking on Values (GABV), a network of 22 of the world's leading sustainable banks from Asia, Latin America, North America and Europe, was presented at Berlin Conference 2013 of the alliance. BRAC Bank is the only member from South East Asia to the global forum.
Repeat borrowers are more benefited than first time borrowers in terms of turnover, assets and sales growth. Four-time repeat financing helps an entrepreneur to stand on the feet. Their financial condition has improved in such a way that they do not need further financing.
Socio-economic condition of borrowers has improved significantly due to catalytic role of BRAC Bank credit. Credit program helps business owners to improve living standard and spend more for health, education of the children and housing.

The Global Alliance for Banking on Values (GABV), a network of the world's leading sustainable banks, issued today a declaration outlining how the banking system should be transformed. The sustainable banks call for a fundamental shift in how banks operate to make them more transparent, sustainable and diverse.
BRAC Bank Limited of Bangladesh is the only member from South East Asia to the global forum.

Sir Fazle Hasan Abed has been elected Chairman of BRAC Bank Limited on March 7, 2013.
Sir Fazle Hasan Abed founded the BRAC Bank in 2001 to develop inclusive banking services for the small and medium entrepreneurs' including those in rural Bangladesh. He was the Chairman of BRAC Bank from July 2001 to April 2008.
Veteran Banker and former Deputy Governor of Bangladesh Bank Mr. Muhammad A. (Rumee) Ali chaired the Board at BRAC Bank from May 2008 to February 2013. During his tenure, BRAC Bank became the country's largest SME bank and successfully expanded into investments, stock brokerage, overseas exchange house and mobile banking services through various subsidiaries.
Mr. Muhammad A. (Rumee) Ali will continue to serve as a member of the Board of Directors.

BRAC Bank has undertaken a noble initiative to mark International Women Day. For the first time in banking industry, the bank has created employment opportunity for women drivers.
The employees of the bank organized a program at Head Office on March 10, 2013 to create awareness about women rights.
The four appointees are -- Afsana Meme of Khulna, Ratna Khatun of Rangpur, Nasrin Khatun of Jhenaidah and Sumi Khatun of Rajshahi. In the program, Mr. Syed Mahbubur Rahman, Managing Director & CEO, BRAC Bank Limited, handed over appointment letters to three drivers. They completed driving course in BRAC Driving School.
Women employees of the bank were presented with flowers in the program with theme "Gender Agenda: Gaining Momentum". The employees joined the program wearing colorful dresses. The Head Office took a festive look with colorful décor.

First Bangladeshi exchange gets full scale licence in UK to provide remittance services across Europe It will help boost forex reserve further
A Bangladeshi exchange house has got licence from the UK regulator to operate full scale remittance operation across Europe. Bangladeshi expatriates will now be able to send money at lower cost with facilities in conversion rate in a faster and secured way.
This will help to further bolster foreign exchange reserve of the country that has reached record high of US$ 14.10 billion recently. This will also facilitate remittance flow in legal channel. Bangladesh economy is highly dependent on remittance as 80 lac Non-Resident Bangladeshis send nearly US$ 13 billion a year.
BRAC Saajan Exchange Limited is the first Bangladeshi exchange house to be upgraded to Authorized Payment Institution (API) from Small Payment Institution (SPI).
The licence from Financial Services Authority, the UK financial watchdog, will allow the company to expand remittance services in other European countries, where about 13 lac NRBs work who contribute to US$ 1.3 billion to foreign exchange reserve.
Bangladeshi community will be able to send hard-earned money to their families in 10 minutes through BRAC Saajan Exchange. They will get the opportunity to invest in Probashi Biniyog, Probashi Wage Earners' Bond helping them for savings.

BRAC Bank organized an exceptional program for underprivileged children at Boi Mela in Bangla Academy premises.
The neglected children have never got chance to visit Boi Mela. They were spellbound to see hundreds of book stalls. They spent some time with eminent writers and poets.

BRAC Bank employees paid homage to language martyrs in a program on the occasion of Amar Ekushey and International Mother Language Day.
On February 20, 2013, the employees gathered together in Head Office and placed floral wreathe in makeshift Shaheed Minar. They sang "Amar Bhaiyer Rakte Ranganu Ekushey February, Ami Ki Bhulite Pari" and other patriotic songs.

The employees of BRAC Bank and its subsidiaries formed a human chain on February 14, 2013 in Dhaka to protest violence against women in solidarity with global campaign 'One Billion Rising'.
Dot at 01:00pm, some 600 Head Office-based officials of BRAC Bank, BRAC EPL Stock Brokerage, BRAC EPL Investments, bKash, bITS came out of their desks and formed a human chain from Gulshan 1 Circle to BRAC Bank Head Office at 1 Gulshan Avenue. They held banners and placards in hands with awareness message for 30 minutes on the walkway besides the road as a silent protest to violence against women.
Mr. Syed Mahbubur Rahman, Managing Director, BRAC Bank Limited, led the officials in the human chain along with and senior officials.
BRAC and various other organizations have taken part in the global campaign that calls for an end to violence, and for justice and gender equality. January 22, 2013 Congratulations to Wasfia Nazreen, on her successful expedition to Mount Vinson, Antarctica
BRAC organised a press conference on Wasfia Nazreen's return to the country after her successful expedition to Mount Vinson, the highest point of Antarctica. She reached at Dhaka airport on 22nd January at 9.20 am local time by Qatar Airways where she was received by BRAC officials. She reached the peak of Mount Vinson on 4th January 2013, as the fourth leg of her "Bangladesh on Seven Summits" campaign which kicked off on 26th March 2012.
Executive Director of BRAC Dr Mahabub Hossain, Head of Communication and Service Quality of BRAC Bank Zeeshan Kingshuk Huq, Head of Marketing Sania Mahmood from bKash, and Rashida Parveen from BRAC's adolescent development programme were present at the press conference. Wasfia handed over the flag of Bangladesh, given to her on the flag-off ceremony of her expedition, to the ED, bKash and BRAC bank officials. The Mount Vinson expedition of Bangladesh on Seven Summits was supported by BRAC in collaboration with bKash Limited and BRAC Bank Limited. Wasfia Nazreen will also work as BRAC's Goodwill Ambassador for the next one year to champion the cause of women empowerment. Congratulating Wasfia, Dr Mahabub Hossain said he hopes Wasfia "can be an idol for young girls and women to look up to, and that many young girls can draw inspiration from her".
While sharing her experience of the expedition she mentioned that, "climbing Mount Vinson was a much tougher challenge than Mount Everest, due to cold winds and much lower temperature. However, I started Seven Summits to inspire girls, and I am proud to accomplish this with support from BRAC".
Wasfia set off on her expedition with a flag-off ceremony on 8th November 2012 to climb Mount Vinson. She reached Canada on 29th November 2012 and underwent a three week long extensive training and acclimatisation in winter wilderness of Canada with Patrick Morrow, the first person in the world to have finished climbing the seven summits 30 years ago. Finally, she left for Antarctica from Chile on 29th December 2012.
On the eve of Bangladesh turning 40, she had taken up the challenge of climbing the highest mountains of each of the seven continents to celebrate women's progress of the last four decades and highlight to the world the resiliency of our people.
January 17, 2013 BRAC Bank introduces automated Queue Management System at branch for faster customer service
BRAC Bank has introduced automated Queue Management System at branch network for smooth and faster delivery of services to the customers.
It is an automated system with state-of-the-art touch screen kiosk and visual displays that will inform and guide customers about all services available in the branch. The new system will save valuable time of the customers as it will reduce waiting time in queue.
The system ensures separate queue for different banking services -- Bearer and A/C Holders, remittance, IPO and tuition fees deposit and prioritizes services for premium, supreme and corporate customers. It will facilitate floor manager to distribute service requests from one desk to another as per situation.
The system is launched as part of the bank's commitment to provide 'Delightful Customer Experience' to its customers. The system will be expanded to other branches of the bank.
Dr. Hafiz G. A. Siddiqi, Director, BRAC Bank Limited, and Mr. Syed Mahbubur Rahman, Managing Director and CEO, BRAC Bank Limited, formally inaugurated the system at Banani Branch in presence of customers and elites of the society. Mr. Firoz Ahmed Khan, Head of Retail Banking, and senior officials of the bank were also present.
January 11, 2013 BRAC Bank employees run marathon for humanity
The employees of BRAC Bank and its subsidiaries bKash, BRAC EPL Investments, BRAC EPL Stock Brokerage and BRAC Saajan have started the new year with a marathon event titled "BRAC Bank DAUR 2013 – Kalyaner Pathchala " to raise fund for humanitarian cause.
Mr. Akram Khan, chief selector and former captain of national cricket team, and Ms. Sharmin Akter (Ratna), renowned shooter, inaugurated the annual marathon for humanity at the centre point of Manik Miah Avenue on Friday, January 11, 2013 in presence of Mr. Syed Mahbubur Rahman, Managing Director & CEO, BRAC Bank Limited and Management Committee Members.
The marathon started at 7:00 a.m. in the morning. Around 4,000 employees from BRAC Bank and its subsidiaries participated in the marathon that started from the centre point of Manik Miah Avenue towards Khamar Bari, and then crossing Rokeya Shoroni, Agargaon, Mirpur Road Shishu Mela, Asad Gate and finally finishing at the center point of Manik Miah Avenue again.
On the occasion, the employees raised a fund of Tk. 12.50 lac, and the company doubled it to Tk. 25 lac from its CSR fund. BRAC Bank first started the marathon for humanity in 2011.
BRAC Bank has donated Tk. 10 lac to Back Up Tide which runs schools and vocational training institutes for intellectually and physically challenged children. After the marathon, Mr. Syed Mahbubur Rahman, Managing Director & CEO, BRAC Bank Limited, handed over the cheque to Ms. Raina Maqsood, Executive Director, Back Up Tide.
A portion of the fund was utilized to distribute blankets to cold affected people in Northern and Southern districts. Some 3300 blankets and 13,500 warm clothes were distributed among poor people in November, 2012.
